Beginning Sept. 9, residents in Ward 7 will have easier access to critical health screenings, COVID-19 testing and more via the United Medical Center (UMC) Mobile Unit.

The mobile unit will be parked in front of the Faunteroy Community Enrichment Center at 4800 Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave. NE every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The FCEC and Not For Profit Health Corporation (NFPHC) (commonly referred to as “United Medical Center” or “UMC”) are aware that a lack of transportation and of time, combined with fear of the Coronavirus are keeping far too many individuals from seeking treatment for controllable health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, and asthma. This is resulting in more serious and life-threatening conditions.

To reverse this trend, the FCEC and UMC are bringing healthcare directly to the community. “The Not-for-Profit Hospital Corporation is excited for the opportunity to get back out in communities in Ward 7 and address the health disparities that have existed for far too long,” said NFPHC Board Chair, LaRuby May.

The unit was originally scheduled to begin services August 26, but was delayed due to staffing concerns, according to a spokesperson.

In addition to COVID-19 testing, UMC medical professionals will also conduct adult wellness checks and screenings for HIV, kidney disease and more. For those in need of follow-up care, UMC professionals will connect patients to primary care physicians, specialists, social workers and other community resources.

“With this partnership, we begin a health initiate that we hope to expand over time,” FCEC Executive Director Malik Lang said.

This initiative is being underwritten by the DC Hope Grant, which is also supporting the FCEC in its expansion of production and distribution of free face-masks to residents in Ward 7, 8 and 5.

To date, FCEC has already delivered nearly 1,000 masks.
